About Rhonda

Multi award winning Mezzo Soprano - Rhonda Head is from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba, Canada. Twenty-time international award-winning Mezzo-Soprano vocalist, Rhonda Head, these awards add to her lengthy list of milestones including singing at New York City’s Carnegie Hall (2016, 2023) and Lincoln Center (2014). Rhonda acts as a Board Member at Canada’s largest rights management organization, SOCAN. As a member of the American Recording Academy. Rhonda has released her fourth full-length album, Waniska. Head’s latest album pays homage to her roots as a member of Swampy Cree Nation in Manitoba’s Treaty 5 Territory.

“The album is dedicated to my late brother Chris. The album is about loss and finding happiness again - Waniska means to rise up or awaken in the Cree Language. Working on this album was very emotional, and spiritual and it also brought great joy. Coming from a reserve in northern Manitoba, this has been one amazing journey from the beginning stages of the album, to the final take,” shares Head.

Rhonda started playing the piano at a young age and excelled in it. Head began winning music competitions. Her piano teacher moved away, and unfortunately stopped piano lessons. She continued music in high school where she took part in the school band, studied the clarinet and the alto clarinet. When she graduated from high school, she attended a college in Toronto ON Canada. While in Toronto, where she decided to try something different, either dance, voice or acting. Rhonda had a musical background, and naturally decided to study voice. When she started looking for a music teacher, she looked in the Yellow Pages – where tons of phone numbers where in the book. The music section was 1 inch thick, Head went into the middle of the music section, she closed her eyes and pointed down on the page. Her finger landed and that was who she called. The teacher also happened to live in the area where she resided at the time. When Rhonda went to her first lesson, a beautiful man opened the door, and she almost ran away…. she forced herself to stay. (Intergenerational Residential School Trauma) Her voice teacher was an Opera singer, and she was open to the style of music and continued with lessons. This was the start of singing for me and how I found my voice. Rhonda says that Classical music found her…

Rhonda’s first Album KAYAS was released in 2010, it was recorded in 5 different languages – Italian, French, Latin, English and Cree. It won Best World Album at the 2011 Native American Music Award. Almost all of her recordings received and music nomination or music award.

“I write songs about the experiences that I have had in my life. I want to keep writing songs, our stories and share them with the world. When I perform, I like moving people, from clapping to the ultimate compliment from and audience – standing ovation. I want to continue to perform in communities and venues around the world. I also want to continue collaborating with other songwriters and artists to record more music,” stated Head.
